Gentlemen Prefer Voodoo

Backstory

When My Zombie Valentine first came out, a lot of people asked if they could just buy the one story I wrote for the anthology, Gentlemen Prefer Voodoo. At the time, I didn’t have any way to do that. But now, I have the rights back to the story. So it’s posted online as an e-read single.

This one was so much fun to write. You see, I love voodoo shops. Whenever I’m in New Orleans, I end up stopping by at least a half dozen obscure, colorful shops. And of course I drag my husband along. He’s usually good for about two or three visits before he asks *the* question, “Angie, you hardly ever buy anything. Why are we going to another one of these?”

Because they’re fun, they’re mysterious and the thing is, I’m not really sure I believe. I mean, who wants to spend twenty dollars on a money potion? It seems to me that the potion is only working for one person and it’s not me. But I love to imagine it working, and get a kick out of seeing what potions and powders and amulets different shops have to offer.

So we spent several afternoons traveling from shop to shop. And I’d tell my poor husband that it was research for a book I planned to write. He’d drink his Hurricane and pretend he believed me. Then one day, my editor called and asked if I’d be interested in being in the My Zombie Valentine anthology, and it all clicked into place…

Gentlemen Prefer Voodoo is my take on what could happen if voodoo were real, and if it could bring about life-altering changes, and if a voodoo mamba (just like any of the one’s I’d met) cast a spell and forgot one important detail…
